Light for the World is a global development organisation. We empower people with disabilities and enable eye health services in low-income countries. Over the last three decades we improved health systems, enabled education for all, and amplified the voices of people with disabilities
Our programmes include:

  • Eye Health – preventing blindness and promoting eye health for all
  • Inclusive Education – ensuring children with disabilities receive quality, inclusive education
  • Inclusive Economic Empowerment – ensuring that barriers are removed for men and women with disabilities to access decent work

We focus on the poorest and hardest to reach because that’s where we will have the biggest impact.

In Uganda, our country strategy for the year 2021-2025 focuses on Eye health, Inclusive Economic Empowerment, Disability Inclusion and Inclusive Education.

Currently, Light for the World Uganda implements projects on eye health, inclusive economic empowerment and disability inclusion with a presence in 21 districts. We are in the process of expanding our team in Uganda and looking for a committed person to fill the role below and be part of this growth.

Communications and Information Officer (1 National Position)

Based in Kampala, Uganda (40 hours a week)

 

About the role 

The Communications Officer will be responsible for managing internal and external communication strategies. This includes crafting press releases, coordinating media relations, managing social media accounts, and ensuring consistent messaging and branding. They will play a key role in maintaining a positive public image and fostering effective internal communication within the organization.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Manage Program related and Country office related strategic communications.

  • Prepare and implement 5-year communications strategy and the yearly plan for the country.
    • Ensure correct application of the Light for the World brand on all external facing products (word documents, ppts, banners, T-shirts, etc.).
    • Achieve program related targets regarding Public Relations (PR) and communication.
    • Ensure all communication has gone through DTP (Desktop Publishing) process, is presentable and is in UNCRPD compliant language.
    • Ensure donor-related visibility guidelines are implemented.

Coordinate, collect, and process media.

  • Liaison between program team and media collection team.
  • Advise on best practices.
  • Arrange for communications logistics for related field visits by program team, international team, or for media collection.
  • Ensure receipt of consent before any media collection.
  • Ensure media is uploaded on Canto with appropriate description and tags.

Content, social media, and website management

  • Ensure all content and communication is accessible and inclusive.
  • Support in-country documentation (like newsletter, annual report, etc.) for communication with relevant stakeholders.
  • Map stakeholders and channels and ensure periodic communication through the communication strategy and plan.
  • Support communications on Light for the World local and international social media channels and website.

Manage relevant consultants, service providers, and partners.

  • Write creative brief, terms of reference, and hire consultants where required.
  • Maintain and contribute to the list of verified consultants and service providers.
  • Provide technical communications support for program implementation partners (like proper branding, DTP (Desktop Publishing) work).
  • Make sure the consultants and service providers use the right templates and branding in their work.

Manage press, media, and Public Relations.

  • Arrange and lead media round tables for advocacy purposes.
    • Ensure cordial relations with media for meaningful distribution of information.
    • Write press releases where required.
    • Archive factsheets on each project implemented in the country.

Requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications 

  • A Bachelors Degree in Mass Communication, Communications, Development Studies, Social Work and/or any other related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in non-profit communications especially digital/ social media communications.
  • Demonstrated skill in compelling written and/or visual storytelling.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to package and disseminate information in different formats for various target audiences.
  • Experience with design packages (Adobe Illustrator/ InDesign, Canva and/or photography is an added bonus.
  • Self‐starter, self‐disciplined and ability to work independently.
  • Passionate about disability inclusion and Light for the World's mission.
